Katoumata Yaffe and her husband Ebrima Sumbundu came illegally to the United States from Gambia in 1992. When the Immigration Service sought to deport them in 2004 they filed for asylum because of their fear that their daughter would be subjected to female mutilation if they were returned to Gambia.
